Spicy Tomato Rice



Rice – 1 cup
Ghee  - 2 tbsp                                              

Oil -    2 tbsp 
Cardamom(elakkai)  -4 
Cloves(kirambu)  – 4 
Cinnamon(pattai)  – ¼ inch piece 
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Chilli powder - 1 tbsp
Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp
Onion sliced – 1
Green chilli - 1
Tomato  - 4 
Curd - 2 tbsp
Coriander ,mint leaves, curry leave - 1 cup

Soak rice in water for atleast 30 minutes. Drain and keep it aside.
Chop/slice the onion and  tomatoes into fine pieces.
Grind the ginger, whole (unpeeled) garlic pods and green chilies in a blender.
Heat ghee in a pressure cooker.Add oil,ghee,cinnamon,cloves, cardamom and stir until the 
whole things starts spluttering.
Add the ginger-garlic-chillies paste and sauté until the raw smell leaves.
Add the onion and saute well until it turn golden brown.
Add the tomatoes and saute well until the whole mixture gets blends well.
Add chilli and turmeric powders and sauté further until the raw smell leaves.
Add curd,curry,coriander,mint leaves and stir well.
Add the rice. Mix well and continue to stir for sometime.
Add 2 cups of water and  salt and stir well.
Pressure cook up to 2 whistles on high flame.After cooked, garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
Serve hot with potato chips and chilled raitha.

  • Please make sure you switch off the stove immediately after the 2 whistles (to avoid making it get burnt).
  • Basmathi rice will bring extra taste.
